Dear Friends
After deep consideration, I decided to run for the office of Mayor of St. Marys because I believe that we stand at the crossroads and must chose our path with care. The issues that face our community – the issues that will dictate the quality of our tomorrows – will also impact our children and future generations.
Taxes & Government Spending – As Mayor of St. Marys
Increased property taxes can choke the life out of families who are struggling to pay their mortgage, renters who are faced with landlords passing along the tax increases, seniors trying to stay afloat on a fixed income and small businesses (many of which are already fighting for survival).
Simply stated: a necessary service (in this case city government) should not, and must not, force its “customers”, to fix its economic problems by increasing taxes – problems that are too often a result of wasteful spending. Every citizen is making sacrifices and watching each penny they spend and as Mayor, I will ensure that our City is doing the same.
The Airport – As Mayor of St. Marys
1. I will request official confirmation from the US Navy that the Navy itself wishes the St. Marys Airport to be relocated. I cannot – and will not – allow any decision to be made that is based on either hearsay or the special interests of any other group. I will NOT allow the voices of the few to over-ride the needs of our community as a whole.
2. Show me the money! The FAA and/or DOT needs to tell the City in writing how much money the City will get for the airport. I will not give away 267 acres owned by St. Marys for nothing.
3. It is a fact that every progressive town has a progressive airport. Once you give the airport away, you can’t get it back.
4. There is nothing that dictates that Camden County is allowed only one airport. If a special interest group feels that an airport that is located 12 miles/30 minutes from St. Marys will further their own interests, then they are free to build one themselves. I see no reason why the taxpayers of St. Marys should, in any way, fund the efforts of such individuals or groups.
Redevelopment of the mill site – As Mayor of St. Marys
As Mayor of St. Marys I would, of course, welcome the opportunity to explore the benefits of the JDA proposal for redevelopment of the mill site. It is imperative, however, that all proposals be analyzed thoroughly so that we are not compromising the economic well-being of future generations for a “quick fix”, temporary and, ultimately, costly solution.”
Jobs & Economic Development – As Mayor of St. Marys
To generate revenue, every business, small or big, depends upon a skilled sales force to inform potential or existing customers about their products. Make no mistake about it: every community across the country strives to attract the new jobs that will strengthen the economic structure of their community. But few communities can offer St. Marys incomparable quality of life. In my opinion we live in an earthy paradise – but one that is fragile and must be fortified by wise governance and planned growth.
We have all of the processes in place – St. Marys Economic Development, Downtown Development and Tourism. We must now, more than ever before, support and utilize these resources and set specific and measurable production goals for acquiring new commerce. We must issue a clear message – St. Marys is open for business! How many people do you know that live in our city now because they visited St. Marys, fell in love with St. Marys and relocated their homes and businesses here?
New business supports existing business: that is a proven fact. It is time to realize the vast potential of St. Marys – to set determined goals and then work together to realize those goals.
Open Government – As Mayor of St. Marys
I believe that it is the moral responsibility of any government to act with complete honesty, accountability and transparency. Government operates best when it operates openly and with integrity. Elected officials are simply representative of the people – they are hired to serve the populace. Accessibility to all government meetings and documents is vital to a successful democracy for informed citizens are empowered citizens. Judge Brandeis once stated, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant”. As Mayor, I will insist on the City’s business always being conducted in the light of day.
Crime – As Mayor of St. Marys
Crime is increasing everywhere and St. Marys is not immune to this frightening trend. As Mayor I would utilize and fully support our dedicated law enforcement departments and individuals in order to address this pressing problem. I want to send a clear message to those who would do harm to our neighbors and our city: Crime will not be tolerated in St. Marys under my watch. That’s non-negotiable.
I ask for your vote and support. I would be deeply honored to serve as your next Mayor
Regards,
Tom
